Most of us study all our lives so that we can find a stable job with steady pay and a career that we will have for the rest of our lives. However, from time to time, there are professionals who realize that they are meant to do more than just attain wealth, like Dr. Siew Tuck Wah.

Dr. Siew was a cosmetic surgeon from Singapore who was on the path to success and wealth. But then one day, he realized that he is supposed to something else. Something that not only will make all of the years he spent studying futile, it also led him to spend his own money for its upkeep. He wanted to rescue the stray dogs of Singapore.

It’s no secret that Singapore is among the wealthiest nations in the world. However, despite this small nation’s meteoric rise on the financial charts, their view on stray dogs stayed the same. Many of these pups are left to fend for themselves, and sometimes they even get abused.

What prompted Dr. Siew to take action is when a pack of stray dogs attacked a girl. The abuse that stray dogs received after the incident was horrifying. Dr. Siew, along with a bunch of his friends, started rescuing these poor pups from the streets. They ran the operation from Dr. Siew’s home. However, as more dogs get rescued, he realized that they needed a bigger place.

That’s when they started Save Our Street Dogs or SOSD. He persuaded his team to lease a place for the stray pups, and in order to ensure the upkeep, Dr. Siew sold his own car and used the funds for it. As the project grew larger, he was at a crossroads.

He then decided to quit his job as a cosmetic surgeon to work full-time at SOSD. He shared that before he started the organization, he wanted a nice car, a big house, and a big paycheck. But working with the stray pups made him realize that there’s so much more to life than having material possessions.
